iOS 16.4 can strongly impact battery life: are you affected?

Every time you update iOS, it's the same story. Many users complain of having reduced autonomy under the new version of the software, proclaiming, therefore, Apple, queen of planned obsolescence.

It is important to understand that, very often, an update can potentially impact the autonomy of the device concerned, but in the short term. In the long term, autonomy should return to the state before the update. One of the reasons for this is the fact that a new version of iOS may, for example, need some time to be fully operational, depending on the data on which it is based. For example, a new Spotlight capability for photos may require an entire rescan of your photo library, which will inevitably have an influence on the battery life of the device during the process.

Thus, tests such as that of Geekbench autonomy, on devices updated for several days, generally do not show a drop in battery performance for a new version of iOS.

Except that, in the case of iOS 16.4,the constant seems to be very different.

iOS 16.4: double-digit battery score drops

iAppleBytesis a YouTube channel that we follow closely. She is particularly known for her iPhone battery tests. Its publisher has not missed the boat for iOS 16.4 since it already offers a comparison of Geekbench tests focused on autonomy, before and after updating to iOS 16.4. Here is what we take away:

  • The most notable score drops between iOS 16.3.1 and iOS 16.4 are for the iPhone XR (-4%), iPhone SE 2020 (-9%), iPhone 12 (-12%), and iPhone 13 (-11%)
  • For iPhone 8 and XR, the change is not significant

These results should, however, be considered with caution, for the following reasons:

  • We have no indication of battery health when testing under iOS 16.3.1. We only have this information for the test day under iOS 16.4
  • These are Geekbench tests. In normal and real use of these iPhones, the differences could seem more or less notable, depending on the needs of each person.

All the same, as shown by the history of test scores recorded byiAppleByteson all these iPhones, visible at the end of the video, the figures have not been this bad since iOS 15.7. iOS 16 had greatly improved the situation. Let's hope, therefore, that a future update of iOS 16 does the same.

What about your side? Have you noticed a drop in battery life on your iPhone or iPad since updating to iOS or iPadOS 16.4? If yes, with which iPhone/iPad model?
