iPhone 13: the Face ID notch finally reduced?

According to a new report from DigiTimes, the Californian firm will use anew VCSEL laser diode chip. This, integrated into the notch on the front of iOS devices with Face ID and underlying face recognition, would see itssize possibly reduced by half in its new version. It should be integrated into the next range of iPhones to be released in September 2021 and could mean areducing the size of the Face ID notch.

Same on future iPads with Face ID. Another significant advantage of this reduced-size VCSEL chip: a lower manufacturing price, since smaller size means more chips produced on the same wafer. But knowing Apple, it is better not to bet on a price reduction for the next products benefiting from the novelty.

This isn't the first time we've heard of a smaller notch on iPhone 13. The Japanese blogMac Otakaraetother various sourcesannounced such a change on the next generation of Apple smartphones a few months ago. As for the Taiwanese publication, source of today's information, it has in the past specified that the camera sensors on the front of the iPhone 13 would benefit from a new layout, which would also make it possible to reduce the size of the notch in which they are included.

The Face ID notch: unchangeable, because it is symbolic?

Initially highly criticized, particularly for the space it takes up on the screen, the Face ID notch, which appeared on iPhone X in 2017, quickly became a distinctive feature of Apple smartphones equipped with face recognition. But if it is an important symbol to this day, it has not changed one iota for 4 years now. It would therefore not be impossible for Apple to consider a renewal in terms of design.

What do you think? Would you like to see a smaller notch on iPhone and iPad in the future?
