iPhone 17 “Air”: one of its characteristics obsesses Apple like never before

If you follow Apple news, you know that the company is already preparing the future of its iPhones. Bloomberg has just revealed new information on the mysterious iPhone 17 “Air”. Mark Gurman, a renowned source behind the scenes at Apple, confirms the arrival of a device of never-before-seen dimensions.

This future iPhone would join the range alongside the iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max. An addition that would mark a turning point in Apple's strategy, with an approach radically different from current standards in terms of design.

A historic record in perspective

According to renowned Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman, the iPhone 17 “Air” would be around 2mm thinner than the current iPhone 16 Pro, which is 8.25mm thick. You would therefore have in your hands an iPhone that is only 6.25 mm thick, a record for Apple. As a reminder, the thinnest iPhone to date wasthe iPhone 6 with its 6.9 mm.

Since the iPhone X, Apple has gradually increased the thickness of its devices to provide more space for the battery, photo sensors and Face ID hardware in particular. But with the iPhone 17 “Air”,the brand seems to want to reverse the trend, even if it means making compromises.

To achieve such finesse, Apple would rely on its own 5G modem, more compact than current Qualcomm models. By better integrating this component with other in-house chips, the firm could save as much space as possible in the chassis of the iPhone 17 “Air”.

Apple is also reportedly exploring new OLED display technology with tactile and visual integrated circuits (TDDI). Inmerging screen layers, this approach would further reduce the overall thickness of the device.

This technique, already proven on the iPad Pro M4, could work wonders on this iPhone 17 “Air”. Such finesse would, however, implysome compromises, particularly on battery capacity or photo versatility.

Towards a new era of design

Other innovations are also being studied at Apple to optimize space. The firm would work in particular on abetter integration of internal components. The first prototypes are already circulating in the corridors of Cupertino, suggesting other surprises between now and the official presentation.

This obsession with finesse could also foreshadow the future arrival of foldable iPhones. Mastering an ultra-thin design would be a first step towardsthese new kind of devices.
