The iPod is 21 years old: rediscover the journey of the famous music player

Twenty-one years ago, theOctober 23, 2001, Apple unveiled the iPod during a keynote in California: a revolutionary device, which is “not a Mac“. On the menu, a small screen of just 2 inches to display your favorite musical titles, with 5 or 10 GB of storage capacity and a chassis as thick as a brick. A jack port is installed on the side so you can plug in headphones and the battery lasts up to ten hours.

What will make this first version successful is also its circular control button: theclick wheel. Thanks to this, it is then easy in just a few seconds to search for a track among hundreds of albums, pause playback or return to home. A design which is reminiscent of that of theDigital Crownon Apple Watch and onAirPods Max

Available in all forms

Quickly, the small mobile device presented bySteve Jobsis critically acclaimed and convinces millions of users across the globe. So much so that the manufacturer chooses to offer new iPod models, with a different format to appeal to even more categories of consumers. The first is the iPod mini, which arrived in 2004. However, this product will only be renewed once, leaving its place for the iPod shuffle, also very small.

The most successful version will probably be theiPod touch. Arriving in September 2007, it is the first to have a touch screen like the iPhone. Moreover, we will find most of the features of the Apple firm's flagship smartphone, such as the photo gallery, Messages, AirDrop or even the Safari browser and the Mail inbox. The seventh generation iPod touch, the latest, is presented in May 2019.

The end of an era

Since then, water has flowed under the bridge and the public seems to have lost interest in the iPod touch so much so that Apple will choose to remove it from its official site this year. But the iPod remains an iconic product, which will save the company from bankruptcy alongside the iMac.
