FBI issues warrant to Apple to access senator's iPhone data

It’s a matter that doesn’t lack irony. Four years ago, Richard Burr, a Republican senator from North Carolina, co-authored a law aimed at forcing tech giantsto reveal the personal data of their customerswhich are the subject of investigations. A few years later, he himself found himself at the heart of an investigation and the FBI wanted to obtain personal information about him from Apple.

Arms exchange between Apple and the FBI

Concretely, the senator is accused of insider trading. He would have anticipated the approaching coronavirus crisis and resold a large volume of shares before the stock market collapsed. As part of this investigation, his iPhone has already been seized. The federal police also obtained from Appleaccess to iCloud dataof the senator. The investigation continues to progress and the FBI has issued a second warrant to the Cupertino company to obtain access to its iPhone data.

The case is still ongoing and it is not yet known whether Apple has accepted this request. Richard Burr, the FBI and Apple declined to comment on the matter. This investigation takes place ina fairly tense contextbetween the Cupertino company and the American authorities. For some time now, federal authorities have been asking Apple to implementune backdoorallowing access to models held by suspects. A request for the time being rejected by the company.

The FBI wants to be able to access the personal data of suspected persons in a legal manner. In fact, he could very well obtain this information using indirect means andwould havetoolsto do it.
