Will the 2021 iPhone have an always-on display?

According to information from Apple's supply chain, it is likely thatthe next iPhone, that of 2021, or, in its Pro version, has a “permanent display” screen. A technology that is already present on Apple Watches and which allows the latter's screen to be kept on without interruption. As with many iPhones, it will be Samsung and LG which will be at the origin of most of these screens, the Chinese manufacturer Boe having failed to pass Apple's quality tests and therefore not having been retained in the manufacturing line for 2021.

Despite what we may legitimately think with the arrival of this new technology, LPTO (that's its name) will not be destructive to the autonomy of the future iPhone. Indeed, the latter could have a very low refresh rate when the phone is not in use, of the order of one image per second, thus allowing a minimum of energy to be consumed. This very low rate would contrast even more with the 120 Hz, which Apple aims to achieve for this new iPhone, according to a report from TheElec.

A variable refresh rate

However, this would not be new for Apple, which already offers a 120 Hz refresh rate on some of its models, such as the iPad Pro. Named “ProMotion” by Apple, this higher rate allows for better responsiveness and better screen fluidity, which is very useful for users who spend a lot of time gaming or watching videos. “ProMotion” is one of the elements that distinguishes the difference between the iPad Pro and the latest generation iPad Air.

According to information from TheElec, only next year's Pro and Pro Max models will be equipped with this LPTO technology. The other two 2021 iPhone models should retain an OLED screen with TFTas is the case for the iPhone 12 range today.
