MacBook Pro 2023: 6 unexpected new features (and one disappointment)

Yesterday, January 17, 2023, the Californian firm released its new creations into the wild, the Apple silicon M2 Pro and M2 Max processors. These, described here, are available on new machines: theMacBook Pro 14 et 16″, and theMac mini version 2023.

Apple's revelations were made in the simplest way, via press release. Even though we were entitled to aKeynote style videoof 18 minutes, not broadcast in real time as for the latest iPhones for example, but published after the fact for viewing on demand.

The Californian manufacturer has nevertheless remained discreet about the specifics of the new machines, apart obviously from the increase in power brought by the new M2 Pro and M2 Max processors. Let's seesome notable pointsconcerning MacBook Pro 14 and 16″ version 2023,which have not necessarily made much noise since yesterday.

MacBook Pro 14 and 16″ 2023: the new SoC side, but not only that!

Wireless connectivity improves greatly

The MacBook Pro 14 and 16″ are equipped withWi-Fi 6Ea youBluetooth 5.3in place of Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0. Bluetooth 5.3 is on paper a little less energy intensive and has better speed than Bluetooth 5.0. Wi-Fi 6E also allows better speeds compared to Wi-Fi 6.

HDMI too

HDMI connectivity goes from version 2.0 on older generation 14/16″ MacBook Pros to version 2.1. on new machines. With this development, on one of the new M2 Pro/Max computers, you can stream uncompressed Dolby multichannel audio via the HDMI jack. In addition, the maximum resolution supported by the connection reaches8K(4K maximum for HDMI 2.0).

Autonomy increases

The MacBook Pro 14 and 16″ each have one hour more battery life than their respective ancestors. Count now18 hours announced for video playback for a 14″ MacBook Pro and 22 hours for a 16″.

A surprise on the MagSafe side

As on the new MacBook Air M2 and MacBook Pro 13″ M2 released last year, the MacBook Pro 14 and 16″ M2 Pro/Max see their charging cable match their finish. So, if previously, when you ordered a machine in Space Gray color, you had a Silver-colored MagSafe cable, now, with a computer in Space Gray, the cable is also in Space Gray. The adapter remains white in all cases though.

Nearly 100GB of RAM!

With the M1 Max chip, the MacBook Pro could previously have a maximum of 64 GB of unified memory. With the M2 Max chip, you can now go up to 96 GB! A first on a MacBook. Only Mac Studio and Mac Pro can go higher.

No changes to the case

If inside, the change is significant with the arrival of the new generation of Apple silicon M2 Pro and M2 Max chips, outside, nothing changes. The 2023 MacBook Pro 14 and 16″ are apparently the same as the previous generation. With the same weight, the same dimensions, the same notch on the front panel, the same connections (including a 3.5 mm headphone output), and still no Touch Bar (although present on MacBook Pro 13″ M2).

But prices are changing, and not just a little…

On the other hand, prices have changed from one generation to the next. See for yourself with the following examples:

  • MacBook Pro 14″ M2 Pro 16 Go RAM et 512 GO SSD : 2 399 € (+150 € vs M1 Pro)
  • MacBook Pro 16″ M2 Pro 16 Go RAM et 512 GO SSD : 2 999 € (+200 € vs M1 Pro)
  • MacBook Pro 16″ M2 Max 21 Go RAM et 1 To SSD : 4 149 € (+300 € vs M2 Max)

We therefore observe a difference of up to €300 from one generation to the next, when going from an Apple silicon M1 series chip to an M2 series chip.

So, who among you has already fallen for one of the new MacBook Pro M2 Pro/Max?
