Netflix could integrate video games as early as 2022. Will Apple accept this?

We've known for a while thatNetflix is interested in video games. And today, his plans are becoming clearer. Indeed, as reported by the Bloomberg site, Netflix has just recruited Mike Verdu, a former Facebook and Electronic Arts employee, to the position of vice-president of game development.

Citing sources close to the matter, Bloomberg also indicates that Netflix would like to offer video games on its streaming platform from next year. Contrary to what other sources had suggested, the company would not want to offer a separate platform for games, but would instead intend to integrate these games into its catalog of films and series. It would therefore not be a subscription similar toApple Arcade.

Furthermore, no additional billing would be considered for access to these games. Indeed, the company's goal would be to use the titles that will be available on its platform in order to attract new subscribers and boost growth. In the coming months, Netflix would form its team dedicated to video games.

Will this comply with App Store rules?

For the moment, we do not know all the details of Netflix's gaming projects. However, we can already wonder if this platform, on which video games will be integrated, will be accepted by Apple.

Indeed, the Cupertino company imposes very strict rules on the App Store, which has led to tense relations with companies wishing to offer games on their applications. We recall, for example, that when Facebook launched its Gaming application on iOS, it was not able to offer games in this app (although this was part of the project) because of Apple's rules.

“Unfortunately, we had to completely remove the gaming functionality in order to get approval from Apple on the standalone Facebook Gaming app, which means iOS users have an inferior experience compared to those using Android”, regretted Sheryl Sandberg, director of operations at Facebook.“We remain focused on building communities for the more than 380 million people who play games on Facebook every month, whether Apple allows it in a standalone app or not. »

We can also recall the problems of cloud gaming platforms on iOS. Officially, Apple does not prohibit cloud gaming on the iPhone. However, the restrictions imposed by the Cupertino company mean that Google and Microsoft do not offer the same experience on iOS as that of their Android apps.

However, in order to get around these restrictions, the two giants have decided to offer web versions (which are not controlled by the App Store) of their cloud gaming services.
