This allows you to save a transport card on the iPhone, for example, and thus pay for your trip simply by scanning the iPhone. In this regard, iPhone XR and XS benefit from a welcome improvement. The Express Cards function on these has a newenergy reserve. This means that it can be activatedeven in the event of insufficient autonomy:
In fact, when the iPhone no longer has enough battery to run iOS and support normal system operation, it goes into a sort of “sleep” mode. The latter also displays an empty battery on the screen, meaning that the discharge is not really complete, but that the device must still be recharged.
And until then in this sleep mode, the iPhone wasunable to perform NFC Express Card transactions. It is the new dedicated energy reserve, available on the Phone XS and XR, which now makes this possible.
Moreover, on the screensaver which displays the empty battery, under iOS 12 and on iPhone XR and XS exclusively, an indication should also remain visible,specifying that Express Cards mode is available.
In short, with this new generation of iPhone, it becomes possible to carry out NFC Express Card transactionseven when the iPhone is in this sleep mode waiting to recharge. This means that a student card or transit pass stored in the iPhone can be scanned and used, even when iOS is no longer running due to lack of power. The notification of an NFC scan is then confirmed by haptic feedback.
Please note, NFC Express Card transactions, even with this energy reserve, cannot be carried out if the use hasturn off your iPhone manually.
At the moment, only a few countries are already taking advantage of NFC Express Cards, in Japan, London and a few cities in the United States, among others, where the iPhone serves as a means of validation for public transport, for example. But other countries should follow soon. The RATP is notablyexpected for a new digital ticket functionality integrated into the iPhone. Perhaps she will be able to take advantage of this new NFC capability of the iPhone XR and XS.
