Last week, OpenAIpresentedGPT4-o, its new speech-focused language model. The latter is able to answer certain questions in less than a second (it previously took several seconds). Facing him, we almost have the impression of talking with a human, especially since the voice which speaks to us seems quite familiar.
“Shocked and angry”
Actress Scarlett Johansson is convinced that the voice of the assistant, known as Sky, sounds a lot like her. In a press release shared online, the star explains that she was contacted directly by Sam Altman, the boss of OpenAI last September. The latter suggested that he become the voice ofChatGPT. She ultimately declined the offer.
“Nine months later, my friends, family and the general public have all noticed how much the latest system called Sky looks like me”, says the actress. She adds:
When I heard the demo, I was shocked, irritated, and incredulous that Mr. Altman had chosen a voice so eerily similar to mine that my closest friends and the media couldn't tell the difference. Mr. Altman even insinuated that the resemblance was intentional, tweeting a single word, “her,” in reference toto the moviein which I play a cat system, Samantha, who forms an intimate relationship with a human being.
Scarlett Johansson says she decided to hire legal counsel to write to OpenAI and Sam Altman and ask them to detail the exact process for developing this voice. She concludes:“At a time when we are all dealing with deepfakes and protecting our own image, our own work, our own identity, I think these issues deserve absolute clarity”.
Questioned, Sam Altman did not fail to react. Quoted byThe Verge, he specifies:“Sky's voice is not Scarlett Johansson's, and it was never intended to sound like her. We recruited the voice actor from Sky before speaking to Ms Johansson. Out of respect for Ms. Johansson, we have stopped using Sky's voice in our products. We are sorry to Ms. Johansson for not having communicated better”.
