Like iOS 17, iPadOS version 17 was revealed on June 5, 2023during the Apple Event at WWDC 23. And like iOS 17, iPadOS 17 has been available to everyone since September 18, 2023, after a whole summer of beta testing. See in particular:
This new update of the iPad OS brings some interesting new features. Unfortunately, not all iPads can take advantage of this.As we did for iPhone and iOS 17, let's see here which iPads can install iPadOS 17 and which tablets remain limited to iPadOS 16.
iPadOS 17: the list of all compatible iPads
Here is the list of iPads supporting iPadOS 17:
- All iPad Pros except the first generation 9.7 and 12.9″ models released in 2015-2016
- iPad Air 3rd generation (2019)
- iPad Air 4th generation (2020)
- iPad Air 5th generation (2022)
- iPad 6th generation (2018)
- iPad 7th generation (2019)
- iPad 8th generation (2020)
- iPad 9th generation (2021)
- iPad 10th generation (2022)
- iPad mini 5th generation (2019)
- iPad mini 6th generation (2021)
Goodbye, dear iPad Pro 1st gen and iPad 5th gen
The iPad models that remain stuck at iPadOS 16 are:those introduced in 2015 and 2016, i.e. the first iPad Pro (9.7 and 12.9″) and the 5th generation iPad. Here's why Apple is taking them out of the running:
- They supported iOS 11, iOS 12, iPadOS, iPadOS 14, iPadOS 15 and iPadOS 16, which makes 6 versions of the OS in total. It is rare for an iPhone or iPad to support 7 major updates to its operating system
- These three iPads run on a 9th generation Apple mobile chip, the A9 for the iPad and the A9X for the iPad Pro. They are certainly not powerful enough to power iPadOS 17 without slowdowns
Finally, as for the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR, for the iPad 6th gen and iPad Pro 2nd gen, the sky is getting darker. They may not be able to take advantage of iPadOS 18. But it's still early to talk about it!
Notice to owners of 2017 iPad Pro (12.9 and 9.7″) and 5th generation iPads, do you keep your tablet even without being able to install iPadOS 17? Or are you planning to change it?
