Version 17 of iOS has been available since September 18, 2022. To install the update, you must have a compatible machine. See the list of iPhones supporting iOS 17 further down in the article.
This new update brings a lot of new features.We have listed nearly 100 of them in our dedicated file, and we explained several of them in our columns throughout the summer, notably concerning the functionalities ofHealth, thephoto library, or the appPhone.
To take advantage of all this, simply update your device. See how to do this below. Note that the procedure is identical on iPad for iPadOS 17.
How to update your iPhone to iOS 17?
1. Make sure your iPhone is compatible
iOS 17 can be installed onNext iPhones:
- All 2023 and 2024 iPhones, including 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max
- iPhone 14 Pro et 14 Pro Max
- iPhone 14 and 14 Plus
- iPhone SE (2022)
- iPhone 13 Pro et 13 Pro Max
- iPhone 13 and 13 mini
- iPhone 12 Pro et 12 Pro Max
- iPhone 12 and 12 mini
- iPhone SE (2020)
- iPhone 11 Pro et iPhone 11 Pro Max
- iPhone 11
- iPhone XS
- iPhone XS Max
- iPhone XR

2. Start the update procedure
Don't worry, updating your iOS device is a very simple procedure, whether the operation is done wirelessly (OTA, for Over The Air) or via a computer.
But be careful, no one is safe from a bug encountered during or just after the update. Therefore, we always advisebackup your iPhone data before installing a new iOS. To do this, take advantage of the iCloud backup function from your iPhone, in the settings, orgo through iTunes, on PC or Mac, or the macOS Finder (for recent versions of macOS).
Once ready for installation, two solutions are available to you:OTA(wireless) orvia wired connection to a Mac or PC.
2a. Wireless iOS 17 update
To update your iPhone OTA:
- go toSettings
- chooseGeneral
- ThenSoftware update
The update should appear on this page. Then click onInstaller.
2b. iOS 17 update via macOS
To update your iPhone via a Mac computer, you must:
- connect your iPhone to the computer on which macOS is installed
- click on the corresponding iPhone icon that appears in the Finder (be careful, for older versions of macOS, iTunes manages iPhone updates)
- to clickGeneralin the top bar
- then chooseCheck for updates
- finally, doTo update
In all cases, it is necessarydemonstrate patience. It's normal to see Apple's servers being heavily used in the first hours following the availability of the new software. Slowdowns and other malfunctions are therefore commonplace. But keep your cool and try the update procedure again if everything doesn't go as planned.
