During the opening conference of WWDC 2024, Apple presented its OS, believed to be 2024, before launching a long beta test phase. As we saw for iOS 18, the final version of each of these software, including iPadOS 18, will arrive a little before the fall.
And like every year, all owners of a slightly aging iPad hope that it can support the update. For iOS 18 we saw thatthe list of compatible iPhones remained identical to that of iOS 17.
But what about the iPad side? Let's list the Apple tablet models that support the new features of iPadOS 18.
iPadOS follows a different path than iOS. Indeed, if iOS 18 can be installedon all iPhones already supporting iOS 17, iPadOS 18 is more selective. iPad 6th generation, iPad Pro 10.5″ and iPad Pro 12.9″ from 2017 (2nd generation) remain stuck on iPadOS 17 and cannot benefit from version 18.
Here is the complete list of tablets that can be updated next fall:
- All iPad Pro 11″
- iPad Pro 12.9″3rd generation and newer models
- iPad Air 3rd generation (2019)
- iPad Air 4th generation (2020)
- iPad Air 5th generation (2022)
- iPad 7th generation (2019)
- iPad 8th generation (2020)
- iPad 9th generation (2021)
- iPad 10th generation (2022)
- iPad mini 5th generation (2019)
- iPad mini 6th generation (2021)
iPadOS 17 had sidelined the first 9.7 and 12.9″ iPad Pro and the 5th generation iPad. These, remaining at iPadOS 16, were able to support 6 major system updates.
Next year, iPadOS 19 could drop the 7th generation iPad and perhaps even the first generation 11″ iPad Pro (2018) as well as the 3rd generation 12.9″ iPad Pro (2018).
If you own one of these models, be aware that support for major versions of iPadOS should not be long anymore. iPadOS 18 could be their definitive system with which they will end up serving you…
