According to a new study based on figures fromStatCounter, Safari currently occupies the place of number 2 in the world of web browsers, just behind Google Chrome with a little more19% market sharecompared to around 65% for Alphabet in May. A ranking which does not really change compared to previous months, but which would have allowed the Apple app to reach a new record.
Indeed, according to a quick calculation shared by the Atlas VPN blog, Safari could now count on no less thanone billion active users. A figure obviously to be divided between Internet users surfing on a mobile device (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch) and on a computer (Mac or Windows).
The reasons for success
Among the factors that could explain this progression, the fact that Safari is automatically available on many Apple products is of course not negligible. For many, this program is also a great choice because itconsumes much lessenergy than Google Chrome: according to the developer, we are talking about an hour and a half more battery life for streaming video, for example.
Safari also includes several tools dedicated toprotect your privacyand integrated directly into the software such as the “privacy report” which alerts you when the editors of certain sites want to track you. Another security solution: automatic switching to HTTPS, which prevents you from coming across corrupted pages and therefore potentially leaking your personal data.
New features
Since updating to macOS Monterey, Safari has also gained other key benefitssuch as the possibility of addingextensions, as Mozilla Firefox has already been offering for several years. Among them, we can cite the case of Pocket (to save links and read them later) or 1Password, a third-party password manager.
With this,Safari is also capable of displaying in dark modeto avoid straining your eyes at night on mobile.
And you, do you also use Safari or do you prefer the competition? If so, what makes you turn to other applications?
