Acquisition of Shazam: Apple obtained the green light from the European Commission

At the end of last year, we learnedApple's acquisition of Shazam. The operation was quickly confirmed by the Cupertino company. This summer, it was the European Commission which got involved in the transaction bylaunching an investigation into this takeover. The aim of this was to check whetherthis was not going to create a monopoly position for Apple. The verdict of the review was planned for publicationuntil September 18. But the commission has just publicly made its decision, a little in advance, therefore. She finally assuresnot having to get in the way of this rapprochement:

The aim of the study carried out by the European Commission was to see, among other things, whether the takeover would tendtowards excessive redirection of Shazam users to Apple Music. The conclusion of the report therefore responds negatively on this point. Ditto for the concern regarding the exclusivity of Shazam data that Apple could have obtained. It turns out that the buyout has no implications on this matter. Other streaming services competing with Apple Music will be able to continue to benefit from the data provided by Shazam.

Still, Apple could benefit from the acquisition toimprove Siri's music recognition skills, notably. This could be even more relevant with Siri used on the HomePod, this high-fidelity connected speaker, focused on a high-quality music listening experience.

In any case, don’t miss our practical article:use Siri for music recognition and how to find stored titles!
