Apple remains very evasive about the autonomy of its iPhones, both during keynotes and on its website. For the new iPhone 12 and 12 Pro, available since last Friday (see here where to find them at the best price),we were able to find ourselves in the technical sheetsprovided by the Cupertino company, slightly different battery life compared to the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro.
The Californian is in fact announcing on this subject an iPhone 12 with more autonomy of one hour in video streaming compared to the iPhone 11. For other activities such as video playback and audio playback, the Cupertino firm does not mention any difference with the previous generation model.
For the iPhone 12 Pro, on paper, you should count on one hour less battery life in video playback compared to the iPhone 11 Pro, and identical times in video streaming and audio playback.
But all these remain only theoretical values. What is it in practice? This is what the YouTuber wanted to measureMrwhosetheboss. The latter in his experiment compared 7 iPhone models, including the latest 12 and 12 Pro, but also the 11 and 11 Pro from last year.
Obviously, he made sure that the iPhones were all set in the same way, in brightness, with a battery at 100% health and the same system settings. And to drain the battery, he performed the same series of actions on each iOS device. Without further ado, here is the ranking obtained:
- iPhone 11 Pro Max: 8 hours 29 minutes
- iPhone 11 Pro: 7 hours 36 minutes
- iPhone 12: 6 hours 41 minutes
- iPhone 12 Pro: 6 hours 35 minutes
- iPhone 11: 5 hours 8 minutes
- iPhone XR: 4 hours 31 minutes
- iPhone SE (2020): 3 hours 59 minutes
We then realize that the iPhone 11 lasts almost an hour less than the iPhone 12, which is close to what Apple announces. The iPhone 12 Pro lasts an hour less than the iPhone 11 Pro, which is also what Apple says on its website.
Nevertheless, it is surprising to see one of the two new models doing better than its predecessor, and the other of the two new models doing less well. If the transition from LCD to OLED can explain the improvement in autonomy from the iPhone 11 to the iPhone 12, for the iPhone 12 Pro, we must actually look at the battery component itself. Indeed, the first disassembly highlighted the presence in the casea 2,815 mAh battery, or 295 mAh less than the iPhone 11 Pro. This may explain the loss of autonomy for the new model compared to the old one. Even if we could have expected new components of the iPhone 12 Pro, including the A14 Bionic chip, better efficiency in terms of energy management. Too bad… Let’s hope for the best for the iPhone 13!
