- Apple must equip all its devices with USB-C ports following European Union measures
- Some think the transition will create havoc
- In question, in particular the standards which would not be respected by the manufacturers
Apple wants to make the transition to USB-C as least restrictive as possible for its customers. To achieve this, the firm has taken numerous measures. As employees operating in Apple stores have tonotify every iPhone 15 buyer of the port change. Or the preparation ofnew USB-C accessories.
However, despite these measures, some believe that the transition will be difficult, and that it would not be possible to overcome the difficulties it could cause. This is the case of Pierre Cohen, a journalist with several decades of experience in the world of new technologies, and more particularly Apple.
What's the problem?
According to the journalist, it switches to USB-C" Eastlikely to cause havoc»in the short term, and for millions of people who were not prepared for this change. However, he thinks that those who have already been confronted with this connection would not be affected.
Pierre Cohen adds that USB-C is a good thing in theory, but in fact, not all cables are the same and there is nothing to differentiate them. It is true that the same port does not mean the same charging or data transfer capacity. Some USB-C cables can achieve speeds up toup to almost 80 Gb/s, while others are limited to 480 Mb/s. That's 166 times slower!
Obviously, it iseasy to recognize very high performance cablesgiven their robust aspects, like the Thunderbolt. But the journalist's fear comes from the lower ranges. The man fears that users may not be able to find the best cable for their device. He attributes the fault in particular to the manufacturers, who do not a priori respect the standards which require them to indicate the characteristics of the cables.
Is this a real problem?
We can understand the fears raised by Pierre Cohen, which seem justified, but a little alarmist. It is unlikely that the majority of iPhone 15 buyers will buy from hard discount stores that sell cables for €2 (no brand is targeted).
It's true that the transition can be a bit restrictive, but you shouldn't make a big deal out of it!
