Since spring 2025, Under pressure from the DMA(Digital Markets ACT), it is possible to replace several native iPhone applications with non -Apple alternatives as a default app. This means that instead of using Apple Plans, Telephone, Messages, Translate, etc., iOS will prioritize the desired third app. This is also the case for GPS application. Google Maps, Waze, Here Wego and others can therefore replace Apple Plans. Here's how to do with Google Maps.
When Google Maps replaces Apple Plans
Although Apple has extended the possibility of choosing default applications to all iOS users around the world, the specific function to change the default navigation application remainsExclusive to European users. This novelty arrived withiOS 18.4 Sorti and Avril 2025.
Why replace Apple Plans with Google Maps? Well, concretely, once the adjustment is made, when you click on an address in a website or in any application, it isGoogle Maps that opens automaticallyinstead of Apple Plans. This change follows a similar evolution for WhatsApp (and other messaging of the same type) which can also be defined as default application for calls and text messages.
How to put Google Maps by default on your iPhone?
To take advantage of this new option, be sure to update Google Maps to its latest version available on the App Store and have iOS 18.4 on your device.
You can then define the application as a default navigation by going toSettings> Applications> Default appson your iPhone.
