This has been a wishful thinking of the European Union for many years now. While just 10 years ago, companies around the world were offering their own charging systems, with cables and connectors that were all different from each other, now the time has come for standardization.
If today USB-C is becoming the standard worldwide, gradually replacing USB-A and micro-USB, certain companies continue to play the role of die-hard Gauls who refuse to comply with the rules of the invader. In the case of Europe, Asterix would be played by Apple and the Romans would be the European Union, which is trying to impose their connectivity on the Cupertino company, without much success for the moment.
Apple: the last bulwark against standardization
But unlike Uderzo and Goscinny's comic strip, the Gauls could well be forced to admit defeat in this battle that is as technological as it is legal. Determined to make USB-C universal connectivity, the Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee plans to create new rules to force Apple to change.
The idea of the European Union could be summed up in just a few words: to make life easier for users, who could use the same charging cable for all devices. The long-term goal is for all products to use USB-C, even if this puts a considerable brake on the development of new, more efficient and less energy-intensive solutions.as Apple regrets.
USB-C, wireless, the future already exists
The only exception made by the European Commission is connected watches and other trackers which are too small to be eligible for USB-C. The latter should maintain other connections, notably wireless. But here again, we learn that the European Commission wants to toughen up its tone.
New rules could therefore make the production of these chargers more complicated so that they are more durable over time and produce less electronic waste. In addition to this ecological aspiration, the European Commission hopes to be able to simplify product packaging. The idea would be to tell the potential buyer whether or not the product contains a charging cable, this could avoid confusion and unnecessary purchases.
