Practical iOS 8: phone calls with a Mac running Yosemite… or with an iPad

With OS X Yosemite and iOS 8, Apple has
decided to make the Mac and the iPhone communicate. This is how under the term
'Continuity', the company designates several interesting functions. Notably
the fact of being ableanswer calls received on iPhone directly
from the Mac
or even the possibility of initiating a call
simply by clicking on a cross-referenced phone number in Safari.

If it works on Mac, it's also possible on iPad!

To understand how to use this function, here is anew article from our
series "in practice"
:

To get started

Before going into detail, it is better to make sure you have taken some
precautions. So the iPhone and Mac/iPad must be connected to the
same WiFi networkbut they must also be connected to the
same iCloud accountfor this to work.

Be careful, if several iPhones in a family are connected to the same
iCloud account, there may be some surprises as long as they are all
placed not far from the computer. With the arrival of family sharing, it is possible
It's time to each create your own account.

Mac side configuration

On the Mac, everything happens in the FaceTime application. For
to find the parameters it is therefore naturally towards it that we will have to turn
turn.

Let's start by looking for 'Preferences' in the FaceTime Menu of the
top bar: next to it, right next to the apple menu. Once the window
Preferences open, make sure the 'Cell calls on
iPhone' is checked, unless you want to deactivate the function
obviously.

Configuration on the iPhone side

On the iPhone too, FaceTime manages this function. To activate it or
deactivate it, so it's inphone settings in the tab
FaceTime
that we must surrender. There too, a “Calls” switch
Cellular" on iPhone must be enabled.

Same principle on the iPad which, remember, provided it is sufficiently
recent (if it has a Lightning port, it's a win) and work under
iOS 8, can also use iPhone to make and receive calls
mobiles.

Utilisation

Now that everything is in place, let's see how to use this new
function.

First of all, when the phone rings, we see opening
the Facetime app and appear, like a notification, abutton which
allows you to pick up.
It is then the Mac which serves as a telephone thanks
to its speaker and microphone.

After a few tests, it must be admitted that the reception functionality
calls still has some progress to make since it does not work
necessarily every time... However, when it worked, my
correspondent did not complain about the connection. Hopefully iOS 8.1 improves
things again.

If you can receive calls, it is also possible to
passer.
To do this, you can choose to go to the contact app
where you just have to click on the desired phone number to see it appear
the notification that allows you to make the call. You can also use a
Safari web page. Indeed, in Apple's browser, pressing a
crossed phone number when browsing allows you to make the call without
see to number. This is valid on both Mac and iPad.
