Since theentry into force of the Digital Markets Act (DMA)Last March, alternative application stores were allowed on iPhone in the European Union. Until now, AltStore PAL, a leading third-party app store, charged its European users a $1.50 per month subscription.
But everything has just changed. Riley Testut, the creator of AltStore PAL, who was already known for his famous Delta emulator, has just announced on Threads thatthe paid subscription is removedwith immediate effect.Existing subscribers will no longer have to payand new users can nowenjoy for freeof this alternative to the App Store.
How is this possible?
This strategic decision is made possible thanks to agenerous MegaGrant grantgranted by Epic Games, the developer well known for its legal fight against Apple. The Epic MegaGrants program aims to “sponsor the development of exciting projects that otherwise may not have sufficient funds to fully come to fruition.” These grants are specifically for small teams, solo developers, and innovators who use our technology to bring bold, challenging, and incredibly creative dreams to life. »
The exact terms of the grant have not been revealed, but it is clear that Epic Games wants to support AltStore PAL in its mission to provide a viable alternative to Apple's App Store. This initiative is part of Epic's efforts to promote a more open and competitive application ecosystem on mobile devices.
Fortnite is coming back to iPhone soon
The timing is interesting sinceEpic Games just submitted its own Epic Games Store, as well as the games Fortnite and Rocket League Sideswipe, for approval on the Apple App Store. Fortnite should soon make its return to iPhone and iPad via AltStore PAL,according to a recent announcement from Epic.
All of this suggests that Epic Games is preparing for abig launch of Fortniteon Apple devices in the coming months, once approval is obtained from Apple.
Players are impatiently waiting to be able to replay Fortnite natively on their iPhone and iPad, without using cloud gaming. To see how to install AltStore Pal, click here.
