According to an investigation unveiled by theWashington Post, cross-app tracking blocked on request since the update to iOS 14 might not be as effective as it seems. Indeed, developers would continue to collect personal data and even exchange it with emails while Internet users have specifically chosen the opposite. A practice directly defying the conditions of use of the App Store, but which would not be condemned in certain cases.
An example notably concerning the video game Subway Surfers. This runner is thus capable of identifying the characteristics of your mobile such as screen brightness or sound volume, with a precision of up to three digits. Your IP address, your free storage capacity and even the remaining battery life of the device are also affected.
Very useful targeting for advertisers
According to thePoststill, the studio behind this title -Sybo- even allows itself to send this private information to a company called Chartboost. Little is known about the latter's activities. The official website of the firm,to be found there, in any case presents different monetization solutions intended for designers of mobile products, apps and games, among others. More specifically, on one of the pages of the site, we find an article which allows application creators to prepare forprivacy changes Apple launched last year.
Already proven, the affair is reminiscent of that ofseveral other market players having also come together to try to overcome the new barriers of iOS 14.
No solution at the moment
Several developers have already been singled out for this practice, but everything suggests that Cupertino has not decided to penalize them for the moment. It's hard to know why, especially whenthe charismatic leader of the firm regularly praises the merits of its security positioning.
Following the revelation of this new scandal, however, it would not be surprising to see Apple turn around. Beware of borderline publishers: in certain cases, it may happen that their platforms are simply banned from the App Store. Epic Games (Fortnite) notably paid the price for this punishment a few months earlier.
