Like many other players in the field of new technologies, Apple must manage the shortage of semiconductors. However, despite these constraints, the firm still managed to achieve good financial performance in the first fiscal quarter of 2022 (which ended on December 25, 2021).
Indeed, the Cupertino firm's quarterly revenues were $123.9 billion, an unprecedented level which exceeds Wall Street forecasts. And compared to the 111 billion dollars generated a year ago, during the same period, the increase is significant.
Apple CEO Tim Cook attributes these record results to innovation in the company's range of products and services.“We are thrilled to see the response from customers around the world at a time when staying connected has never been more important. We are doing everything we can to help build a better world – progressing towards our goal of becoming carbon neutral in our supply chain and products by 2030, and continuing our work in education and of racial equity and justice », he also declared.
All products were a hit, except the iPad
And of course, the iPhone 13 sold very well. Indeed, revenues generated by the iPhone were $71.6 billion during the quarter, compared to $65.6 billion during the same period in 2020. Mac sales also exploded thanks to the transition to chips Apple Silicon. Revenue in this category was $10.9 billion, up $2 billion year-over-year.
Revenues generated by the wearables category (Apple Watch, AirPods, HomePod) were also increasing. In contrast, iPad sales were down 14%. Apple explains that this category has suffered particularly significant supply constraints. Rumors have also indicated that Apple has decided to use components normally dedicated to the iPad to manufacture mored’iPhone 13.
In any case, Apple was able to achieve these great financial performances despite a difficult context. As usual, the Cupertino company has not made many comments about the constraints it faced.
But the delivery time displayed on the company's website, for the delivery of certain products, gave us an idea of these difficulties. The good news is that today the situation is improving.
Apple presents these revenues boosted by products launched in 2021, while it is now preparing those for 2022. Normally, the Cupertino company will organize an event this spring. And normally, this will present a newiPhone SE, as well as a newiPad Air.
