HomePod speaker can replace Apple TV or iPad as HomeKit gateway

Without having a HomeKit gateway,
impossible to deactivate HomeKit connected lighting from outside the
home, via cellular internet or another Wi-Fi network. Not possible
also launch or consult any HomeKit connected object of its
at home out of Bluetooth or WiFi range, away from home. It is therefore
important to mention that the HomePod speaker, just
launched for pre-order in English-speaking countries
, completes the list
devices that can serve as a HomeKit gateway, previously limited to
l’Apple TV and iPad.

To read:
For the home: 18 connected accessories to control with the iPhone and
the iPad, several of which are HomeKit compatible

Wesaw here how
the iPad could serve as a HomeKit gateway
, thus providing access to its
network of connected objects remotely from the home (via 3G/4G in particular). He
is all the more relevant to use the iPad for this, as it is for
a lot of a machine that stays at home.

Just like the Apple TV, companion to the TV and therefore multimedia box
central by definition attached to the house, the HomePod canhim too
serve as a HomeKit hub
.

Instructions for HomeKit devices are then done from its
iPhone: instructions are sent via 3G/4G to iCloud, which
returns to the HomePod speaker, which is responsible for contacting the objects
connected via Bluetooth or local WiFi. The same goes in the other direction,
for consulting information (temperature, video) from sensors
HomeKit.

This functionality may appeal to thosewho do not own Apple
TV or iPad at home
, but who already have several devices
connected. It is particularly practical to be able to manage a connected thermostat,
as
that of Netatmo available here
, remotely from the house, to adjust the
temperature of its interior a few minutes before returning.

The HomePod speakercomes out on the 9th
February in the US, UK and Australia
, it is expected in the spring in
France.
