Apple confirms its ambitions for AI. Last June, the firm presented Apple Intelligence, its new system which improves Siri. For the most complex tasks, the latter relies on ChatGPT from OpenAI. However, a twist disrupts this emerging collaboration.
Apple withdraws from funding OpenAI
According to the Wall Street Journal,Apple ultimately decided not to participatein the next OpenAI funding round. The startup plans toraise $6.5 billionnext week. Microsoft, already a 49% shareholder, should strengthen its position with an additional billion.
Apple's withdrawal at the last minute is surprising, but it is worth remembering that the Californian company is not in the habit of investing in external startups. The firm generally prefers direct acquisitions or financing from strategic partners.
OpenAI under pressure
This turnaround comes as OpenAI comes under increasing pressure from its investors. Despite amonthly turnover of 300 million dollarsin August, the startup expects to lose a colossal sum of 5 billion this year. Infrastructure and personnel costs weigh heavily.
To deal with this, OpenAI plans to gradually increase the price of ChatGPT Plus, its premium offering. The subscription would increase from 20 to44 dollars per monthby 2029. A risky bet as many users consider the current price too high.
What future for AI at Apple?
Apple's departure from the round does not call into question the integration of ChatGPT in iOS 18. However, it does raise questions regarding the firm's long-term AI strategy. Tim Cook clarified that other language models, like Google's Gemini, could be considered in the future.
Ultimately, Apple could even develop its own in-house conversational agent. The company has the necessary resources and know-how, but external partnerships in the context of AI are profitable for it. The Apple firm can provide efficient tools to its users, while taking advantage of the know-how of OpenAI, and perhaps Gemini later, in order to use it for its own models.
