With iOS 18.2 Apple no longer offers default applications

Apple should release iOS 18.1 in a few days, but until then, the Apple brand's engineers are already working on the sequel, and in particular iOS 18.2. In line with the latest updates,iOS 18.2should bring new features linked to Apple Intelligence, but also customization possibilities for users around the world.

Giving control back to users is a wishful thinking of the European Union which has been waging legal battles against Apple for several years with the aim of changing the behavior of the Cupertino company, for the good of users. Europe has notably allowed the abandonment of Lightning technology in favor of USB-C.

Apple leaves control to the user

On the issue of personalization, the EU has given the green light forthird-party app stores. These competitors to the App Store did not even have the right to exist under iOS before the Brussels decision. With iOS 18.2, Apple once again complies with European rules regarding default applications.

The Apple brand is launching a new feature allowing you to modify the default applications to send (and receive) SMS or calls. In other words, the “telephone” and “messages” services present on all iPhones in the world could soon be replaced.

In total, there are seven categories that are affected by this change according to information from 9to5Mac. The specialized site talks about possible changes for emails, messaging, calls, call screening, navigation applications, password and code managers, and finally keyboard customization applications.

iOS 18.2: a matter of time

For now it is possible to test these new features with the beta versions of iOS 18.2. Problem, these updates are only available if you havean iPhone compatible with Apple Intelligence. In other words, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 owners are welcome to iOS 18.2.

For the others you will have to wait for the release of a public rand version of the update. It should arrive during the month of December, before the start of the end-of-year holidays.
