Following the announcement of Apple's quarterly financial results, its CEO, Tim Cook, declared that he had been working on generative artificial intelligence for “years“. An intervention which occurs while all eyes are on the potential competitor of ChatGPT that the Apple firm could reveal, but which does not arrive, and will not see in any casenotthe day before, probably, many months.
This announcement from Tim Cook also echoes the ten years of preparation for the Apple Vision Pro, a mixed reality headset unveiled by Cupertino during the Worldwide Developer Conference. To create the device, it was necessary to file more than five thousand different patents. But this type of file filed with the USPTO* is still rarer on the AI side, with the manufacturer.
A monstrous budget
With this, we also learned, thanks precisely to Apple's financial results, that the company spent no less than 22.6 billion dollars on research and development during the (current) fiscal year. That's $3.12 billion more than last year. However, it is exactly this department which is in charge of generative artificial intelligence.
For comparison, Apple's selling and administrative expenses were only about $18.8 billion over the same period. The amount spent trying, perhaps, toimprove Siri voice assistant, is therefore colossal. But let's not forget that competition is raging: Microsoft has already invested no less than ten billion dollars in the OpenAI robot, for its part...
When will there be an Apple language model?
According to Ming-Chi Kuo, expert on the future projects of the group with three trillion dollars in capitalization, Apple could offer an alternative to ChatGPT by 2024 at the earliest. But the developer will still need to identify the best way to minimize the quantity of errors generated: internally, there would be no question of deploying anything without ensuring it first. And this is about doing things better than other services, like Bard or Claude.
