iOS 17: its release date is finally known!

  • iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 will be released on Monday, September 18, next week
  • The beta versions of these platforms are already available
  • Many new features are planned, particularly for Safari and AirPlay

It's done: Apple has announced that iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 will be released in final version onMonday September 18. All iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro are natively equipped. For other compatible mobiles from the Apple company, simply update them from the Settings app. Like every year, installation is free.

Regarding iPadOS 17, it is simply a variation of iOS 17 for tablets. Therelist of compatible deviceshas already been shared by the publisher. We discover in particular that the iPads unveiled in 2015 and 2016 are left aside.

An alternative for the most impatient

You don't want to wait that long? Don't panic. Indeed, iPadOS 17 and iOS 17 are already available in versionbetafor the most daring. If you have to be courageous to install these versions, it is above all because major bugs may be present. But these will probably be corrected with the final version: hence the interest in waiting.

To install a beta version, you must obtain a “profile”. It was quite complicated previously, but recently, Apple has decided to open up more to testers. It is thus possible to download the software quite quickly, via the developer's websitewhich is normally dedicated to app creators. The latter were in fact the first invited to the betas before.

What's new in iOS 17?

iOS 17 comes with a plethora of new features, among which we find:

  • AirPlay compatibility with hotel rooms
  • NameDrop
  • karaoke mode on Apple Music
  • sharing passwords with the Safari browser
  • a new shortcut to reply to a message

iOS 17 is not compatible with all iPhones. However, it can be installed on all iPhone 14s, all iPhone 13s and all iPhone 11s – among others.

What's new in iPadOS 17?

With iPadOS 17, Apple offers us relatively few exclusives unavailable on iPhones. But this is particularly the case ofimproved PDF editingwith the Notes app, which is installed natively on iPads. Tablets can now also support third-party webcams, which plug into the system via a simple USB-C connection.

Just like iOS 17, iPadOS 17 was presented at the Worldwide Developer Conference last June. Apple had so far simply specified that the final version would arrive in the fall: the announcement of the release date is therefore in advance, by a few days. But Apple is also accumulating delays. The transition to Macs all equipped with Apple silicon, for example, took longer than originally expected.
