No more USB-A? The Mac mini M4 would bet everything on USB-C

Mark Gurman, the watchful eye at homeBloomberg, reveals to us behind the scenes of this metamorphosisin this article, which promises to shake up the habits of apple aficionados. Since 2010 (14 years of existence, already!),the Mac minihardly changed its appearance. But this time, it's a revolution. Exit the 7.7-inch cube, make way for a design inspired byMac Studio, in a format barely larger than an Apple TV. A slimming diet that won't stop you frombuild muscle more than effectivelywith the arrival under its hood ofto the M4 chip.

USB-C reigns supreme, USB-A forgotten

This is the big upheaval on the connectivity side. Apple is drawing a line under USB-A, in favor of five USB-C ports. Two on the front – a first for the Mac mini – and three on the back. A particular choice which risks annoying some users, especially among users of wireless mice with USB-A dongle. But the Cupertino company doesn't care, having already banned this port from its other machines.

Rest assured, not everything goes to the scrapheap. The HDMI cable, the Ethernet port and the dedicated headphone jack remain in the game. And what will happen to food? It will stay warm inside the case, enough to allay the fears of the most skeptical.

A facelift that calls for others

This new Mac mini is just the tip of the iceberg, becauseApple is preparing a major cleaning in its range. The Mac Mini M4 should appear in October, closely followed by its big brother M4 Pro. And it's not over: MacBook Pro, iMac, MacBook Air, Mac Studio, Mac Pro... The whole family should be playing pool by the year 2025.

So, revolution or evolution?A bit of both, no doubt. Apple is playing the modernity card with USB-C, while keeping one foot in the past. This new iteration of the Mac minilikely to make a lot of noise. Will this refreshed look succeed in capturing the hearts – and wallets – of the brand’s loyalists?

  • The Mac Mini radically changes its design, adopting a more compact format and a more powerful M4 chip.
  • Apple is ditching USB-A in favor of USB-C, which might require adapters for some users.
  • This new Mac Mini marks the start of a general update of Apple's Mac lineup, with new models planned through 2025.
