iOS 15.5: Apple deploys beta 3 (developers) with “Sensitive Locations” in Photos

A few hours ago, yesterday evening, the Californian firm published thethirdBeta versionof the next update of iOS 15.5. A batch of new betas is also available, for iPadOS 15.5, watchOS 8.6, HomePodOS 15.5 and tvOS 15.5. These are currently intended for users registered in the developer beta test program only. For the public betas, you will have to wait until later today.

As described here, iOS 15.5 seems to bring some interesting new features. According to the first beta anyway. Because the second was notwhat a corrective.

With beta 3, Apple is surely, but slowly, evolving its update. In the same way as for beta 2, there are not many major changes to get your teeth into. Again, these are mostly bug fixes and security improvements.

Except for one point: in the source code of the OS, on the side of Photos and the Memories function, a new mention has appeared: “Sensitive Locations”, for “sensitive places”.

Any photograph located in one of these sensitive locations will never be included in a souvenir. Here is the list of locations affected to date in iOS 15.5 in beta 3:

  • Yad Vashem Memorial
  • Dachau concentration camp
  • American Holocaust Museum
  • Majdanek Concentration Camp
  • Holocaust Memorial in Berlin
  • The Schindler Factory
  • Camp d’extermination de Belzec
  • Anne Frank House
  • Camp d’extermination de Sobibor
  • Camp d’extermination de Treblinka
  • Camp d’extermination de Chelmno-Kulmhof
  • Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp

These are mainly positions related to the Holocaust. Each is associated with latitude, longitude and radius information. Thus, each photo taken in one of these places and up to x kilometers around cannot be part of a memory. This will obviously also apply to videos.

We imagine that Apple will complete this list in the future. The question remains as to the arrival of an option allowing the user to add places to this list themselves.

What do you think of this new feature?
