Intel signs the iPhone 11/11 Pro modems: for the last time?

Our colleagues at PCMag revealed that inside the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro there are LTE modems from Intel. They were even able to verify this without opening the terminals. They are simply based on the layout of the menu corresponding to the modem in iOS passed into a sort of diagnostic mode, called “Field Test” in English.

For an Intel modem, the menu layout is different from that for a Qualcomm modem.

It is specified, however, that only devices sold on American soil have been tested. It is then possible that different components are used for iPhone 11 and 11 Pro sold elsewhere in the world, in China in particular, where the cellular connection from the iPhone is done via other cellular network bands than in the USA.

But according to the source, there is little chance of finding modem chips from other manufacturers in iPhone 11 and 11 Pro sold on the other side of the globe.

In addition, journalists were able to establish that it would be the XMM 7660 modem reference, the last chip created by Intel before the closure of its “modems” division just recently.

We remind you, it is Apple whichgot your hands on this Intel division dedicated to modemsa few weeks ago, for $1 billion. The Cupertino company would in fact aim to create its own modem chips, as it already does for processors, and with success in fact. These are among the highest performing mobile processors on the market.

The next modems for the year 2020 should, however, be from Qualcomm. Apple modems should indeed notnot see the light of day before 2022.

Still, according to the first tests and feedback, these Intel modems for the iPhone 11 and 11 Prowould be much faster in 4Gthan those of the iPhone XS/XS Max, up to 13% depending onSpeedSmart. We will have to be satisfied with this while waiting for the arrival of 5G, which could happen next yearon iPhone, but also onMacBook.
