A petition already calls for the removal of the future “scan” of iCloud photos

In recent days, the apple brand has found itself in a scandal that it could have done without. So in the middle of summer vacation, the Cupertino company had just announced at the end of last week that it wouldanalyze iCloud photosby comparing them with the database of missing or exploited children, in order to combat child crime.

If everyone initially welcomed Apple's initiative to use its rank to combat these horrible crimes, very quickly, voices rose against Apple, protesting against this invasion of our private lives. Since then, big names in the defense of individual freedoms such as the EFF organization, or the whistleblower Edward Snowden have expressed their concern about this new functionality which should arrive“during the end of the year”in Apple's own words in its press release.

In order to put pressure on the Apple brand, an open letter is currently circulating online, and it purely and simply requests the removal of this functionality from future updates. Cited above, Edward Snowden was one of the first big names in the internet world to sign this petition, which has since been joined by thousands of anonymous people.

Apple's back to the wall?

In addition to the firm request for withdrawal of this update, the signatories want the Cupertino company to reaffirm its beliefs regarding data confidentiality, and in particular end-to-end encryption,a key point of iMessagewhich could be compromised by this update.

For the moment, Apple has not responded to its accusers and no one yet knows if it will give in to their demands, or if, as best it can, it will present this update to the public. This case is in any case reminiscent of that of WhatsApp which lost millions of users due to an update regarding the confidentiality of its data. However, it is difficult to imagine such a scenario for Apple.
