With iOS 6, Apple replaced Google Maps with one
homemade mapping application, known as Maps. At its beginnings,
this contained numerous inaccuracies, but as time went on
iOS updates, it has corrected the situation to become a more reliable solution
and complete.
Apple listened to user suggestions (but not only) and carried out
several changes to Plans iniOS
10. Among the most notable new features, we can mention a
new design, of theimprovements at the level of
navigation, or even the possibilities offered to developers for
add new features within the cards themselves.
Return to these changes, for a map always
in competition with Google Mapsin the hearts of users:
New Design
As part of the new Plans design, several elements of the interface
have been modified and new ones have appeared under iOS 10. The blue dot
indicating the position now includes an arrow to show the direction
in which the user moves.
Two new buttons at the top right of the screen allow you to center the
view of the user's current position, and to access the settings of
Plans. This allows, for example, switching to satellite view or displaying
traffic conditions.
New information regarding the weather has been added to the interface,
bottom right. We now find atime icon
and the temperature of the placethat the user has displayed in Maps. That
can be used in particular to quickly know the weather conditions of a
place where we plan to go.
Research and information
The search bar has been moved to the bottom of the main screen. By pulling
this one towards the top, iOS will offer different places which could
interest the user based on their recent searches, places
present in the calendar or frequently visited places (such as café,
restaurant, etc.).
The design of the information sheets has also been revised, with buttons to
get directions, images of the location, opening hours and
closure for all days of the week, customer reviews, and more
infos on Yelp provenance.
When a user performs a fairly general search like
“restaurants” around you and which can contain many subcategories,
Plans now displays a horizontal bar at the bottom of the screen offering
subcategories for the search term.
If the user changes location on the map, Maps offers to perform the
same search on the new location displayed on the screen.
Navigation
The navigation system with visual aid and/or voice guidance can be seen
also benefited from several improvements, notably at the level of
the interface. This includesbigger text and buttons, et
the ability to navigate on the map while the app is in guidance mode
(which was not possible before).
Plans also offers adynamic viewwhich will grow bigger or
decrease the size of the map when the user approaches a change
direction to improve reading. According to Apple, Plans will also be able to
monitor traffic conditions and alert the user by
case of problems on the route.
A user can also ask Siri to change the route to
go to the nearest gas station, café or restaurant, or make a
manual search by sliding the bottom panel upwards (which
also modifies the route to take into account the stop).
Widgets et API
iOS 10 proposethree new widgetsfor Plans:
Destinations, Nearby, and Public Transportation.
The widgetDestinations" allows you to have an overview of places
recommended as the placeOr
parked his vehicleor the place of a meeting present in the
calendar.
The widgetClose" offers quick access to four
popular search categories: restaurants, bars, shopping, and
stations d’essence.
Finally the widget "Public transport" provides alerts
for transport lines that the user has added to his favorites in
l’app Plans.
Apple will make an API available to developers to be able to add
interface elements in Maps. However, this API will only be available
for certain types of apps such as chauffeur-driven car services (Uber),
reservation apps (Booking), and a few others. It will thus be possible
to display the location of an Uber car directly in Maps.
Finally, the last nice little new feature in iOS 10, Maps is capable of
find the last location of a user's car. A function

If Plans should become richer, we can only regret the absence
information on the extension of coverage in terms of management of
public transport. This very practical new feature only covers
some cities in the world and we would like to see it arrive in
others!
