Pokémon Go is 5 years old and worth $5 billion

The week was rather successful for Niantic, which celebrated the fifth anniversary of the mobile game Pokémon GO in style, at the same time crossing the $5 billion revenue mark. The mobile game, which caused a sensation when it was launched in 2016,is less talked about today, but remains a reference on the App Store.

In its latest report, Sensor Tower highlights that gaming growth remains impressive. Comparing the first half of 2021 to 2020, gaming revenues increased by 34%, reaching $642 million if we combine iOS and Android. If the game meta phenomenal success when it was launched in 2016, it was finally in 2020 that the latter had its best year to date, passing the mark of 1.3 billion dollars in revenue in the 2020 financial year alone.

Based on the figures provided in the Sensor Tower report, the United States appears to be the leading consumer country for the game.

It is by far the one that has brought in the most revenue for the franchise, 37% of the 5 billion collected over the last five years come from Uncle Sam's country. Quite logically, it is also from the star-studded banner that the game was the most downloaded, ahead of Brazil and India who completed the podium. Today Pokémon GO has more than 600 million downloads on iOS and Android.

If the game's figures are impressive, they are only a drop in the bucket in the Pokémon universe, which since its debut in 1996 has generated nearly 100 billion dollars. Reducing mobile gaming to 5% of the company's revenue.
