Qualcomm accuses Apple of helping Intel copy its 4G modems for the iPhone

Since last year, Qualcomm, one of Apple's major suppliers for the iPhone and iPad, and in particular their modem chip, has beenin lawsuit with the apple firm. The mobile chip specialist was notably accused by the Cupertino company of anti-competitive practices.

Still in conflict with Apple, Qualcomm has just filed a new complaint against the latter. In it, the chip makeraccuses Apple of having helped Intel copy its 4G modems for the iPhone.

According to Qualcomm, Apple stolesource code and confidential information,on the design of its modem chips. This information would have beentransmitted to Intel, to help themimprove their 4G chipswhich are used in the iPhone.

In the past, Qualcomm had reached an agreement with Apple. So that the latter can partially access the source code and tools used for the design of modem chips.

Qualcomm thinks that the Apple firm would haveshared this information with Intel. This is to improve Intel's modem chips, and accelerate the transition from Qualcomm chips in the iPhone, toonly Intel chips.

In the midst of a legal dispute with Qualcomm, the Cupertino company has decided to do without Qualcomm modem chips entirely for the new iPhones.

This has recently beenconfirmed by iPhone XS teardownand XS Max by the iFixit teams, the new models include a modem chip from Intel.

Apple has been using Qualcomm chips for many years, and there are still some in its iPhones and iPads to this day. The Cupertino company began to diversify its sources of supply, with the iPhone 7 in 2016.

According to the firm KGI, Intel could be behind Qualcomm regarding 5G technology, and therefore Apple could be “forced” to use Qualcomm components again.
