The use of mobile data, with
improving mobile connection speed and network coverage
territory in 3 and 4Ghas been increasing in recent years. THE
operators have understood this well and are offering increasingly more envelopes
packed with data. And then the use of the internet becomes
more and more demanding, with uses such as music and video streaming,
downloading podcasts, photos etc.
The GSM Association proposed a report according to which
Europeans consumed on average 1.8 GB per month in 2015, a number which
could bemultiplied by 5 by 2020. But the differences
may be significant between countries, some arebetter endowed than
others on Wi-Fifree (including France in particular), others do not have
not the possibility of having a large envelope of data in their package
mobile.
So to clarify the viewfinder and have a little overview of the use of
monthly data by you, readers, we have set up
a recent survey on this subject. The question was about the size of
the envelope consumed each month. Several answers were possible:
more than 5 GB, between 3 and 5 GB, from 2 to 3 GB, between 1 and 2 GB, between 500 and 1 GB
and less than 500 MB.
With more than1800 responses, here is what emerges from
this investigation:
The numbers
You are37% consume more than 5 GBof data per month,
i.e. more than a third of the voters. The lower range, 3 to 5 GB,
garners almost a quarter of the votes (23%). Among the people who took the
time to respond, one in two consumes more than 5 GB.
If we add those who "only" use between 2 and 3 GB of data per
months (16%), we arrive at3 quarter of readers who participated in the
survey who consume more than 2 GB per month.
Concerning more moderate uses, the last quarter of voters are distributed
therefore half between 1 and 2 GB and the other half below 1 GB. Only 4% indicate
consume only 500 MB or less.
We can conclude that you are well above the monthly 1.8 GB of
consumption of the average European. But it should be noted, however, that the public
having voted here isprobably more technical than French
AVERAGE, by the device used, the interest in high-tech and
tendency to use various applications on the device.
Uses: multimedia
Your comments made it possible to identify the main uses, consumers
of mobile data. Unsurprisingly, it isvideo streaming and
musical. Many cited different video platforms like YouTube
or Netflix for series, some also likeenjoy the video
in replayoffered on mobile by television channels.
Others consume music and download podcasts, which is
a factor in Internet data consumption.
In notable use, but less cited, we can notegames in
ligneand thevideo chats(Skype, FaceTime),
they are also rather greedy and therefore quickly increase the data
consumed.
To enable this type of use, many of you need to have
packages with substantial data envelopes, often more
of 10 GB, with some indicating they need 20 or even 40 GB per month. He
may indeed happen that 4G is faster and more stable than
ADSL connection in certain regions, hence a preference for an ADSL connection
via mobile, even at home.
Others have substantial data envelopes within their package,
but only consume half or less each month. Il
seems to be astrong trend. You are
several to cite a capacity integrated into the package representing once and
half or 2 times more than the data actually consumed. More like security
chosen by users in the case of one month of use
exceptionally high, or a tendency of operators to offer very
large envelopesto attract the customer? The question remains
posed.
We can also imagine that if 4G coverage progresses quickly and well, with
data envelopes which continue to increase regularly, and if
at the same time, wired connections like ADSL remain at a standstill,
particularly in small towns and countryside, we will continue to see
more and more people prefer to connect to the internet via mobile
and 4Grather than via the classic internet box (see
recent study on the “mobile first” phenomenon in France).
Many thanks to you readers for your participation in this survey and your
always interesting comments.
