After the CEO of Orange, that of SFR evokes a return to 3 operators “fairly quickly”

Not long ago,Séphane Richard, CEO of Orange, mentioned the possibility of amerger of two major operators in France, in the coming months. This hypothesis was recently reinforced byAlain Weill, director of Altice, parent company of SFR. According to the latter, a return to3 operators would be very likely in the coming times, especially at the dawn of massive investments to be made for the development of 5G.

Alain Weill therefore sees this new wireless internet technology and the significant investments that result from it as the cause of a merger between 2 operators.

Stéphane Richard rather saw a rapprochement driven by an unprecedented price war driven by almost constant promotions (see elsewherehere the package promo news).

Nevertheless, the two men support aconsolidation of telecoms to come in France in the near future. The regulatory authority ARCEP hadrecently shownhave no reason to block such a process, if it were to take place. Alain Weill also assured that the government would even be in favor of it.

Still, nothing indicates at the moment which two operators are most likely to merge. The stock market saw the values of Iliad (Free) and Altice (SFR) rise following these declarations. But the latest maneuvers in this area also concernedBouygues for a takeover of SFR, but alsoOrange for a merger with Bouygues 2 years ago.

In any case, the year 2019 couldprobably be the scene of a return to 3 operators in France.
