Shorts: YouTube unveils its new TikTok competitor

Clearly, the TikTok format makes many people envious. After Instagram which launchedReelslast August, it was Google's turn through YouTube to unveil a new platform similar to the Chinese application. Concretely, Shorts will be integrated directly into YouTube. Chris Jaffe, VP of Product Management who is working on this project, said more ina blog post:

Shorts is a new short-form video experience for creators and artists who want to shoot short, eye-catching videos using just their mobile phones.

TikTok remains very popular

As on TikTok, videographers will be able to use background music through a catalog made available. For the moment, this new platform is only available in beta in India and only on Android. An iOS version is obviously not excluded but it will come a little later.

The choice of India owes nothing to chance. The country distinguished itself by deciding to ban the Chinese application on its territory. This frustrated several hundred million people who had made a habit of using TikTok. There is therefore a real market to be recovered.

But this is only the beginning and Chris Jaffe promises: “This is an early version of the product, but we're releasing it now to bring you – our global community of users, creators, and artists – on our journey with us as we build and improve Shorts. We will continue to add new features and expand to other countries in the coming months, as we learn from you and listen to your feedback».

Despite this new competition and the threat of a ban in the United States, TikTok was the most downloaded application in the world in August.
