Powerskin iPhone 5 “Pop 'n Charge” Battery Test

As long as you
need to call for a long time, guide you with maps and emails to
consult regularly, without forgetting to read our articles via the application
i-nfo.fr V2 of the blog, you will quickly exhaust the iPhone battery...
Fortunately, in the absence of an interchangeable battery, there are
solutions: external batteries to plug in or even cases. With
the change of connections "Lightning, he has
took several months to see the arrival of the first products compatible with
the iPhone 5, but they are now here.

After thehull
iPhone 5 tested from here
, this week we are going to focus on a
battery backup for iPhone and iPod touch well
particular
also from the brandPowerskin. In fact, it is not a shell
protection, it is not an independent battery either, no it is a
surprising hybrid product with its small suction cups and its Lighting cable
curved: a battery of2000 mAhto stick on the back
of his iPhone while it recharges.

This battery is labeled "Made for iPhone" by Apple,
this means that there is no risk that future versions of iOS will not
render them unusable, as one might fear for models that have not
not the license for the “Lightning” connector.

Premier contact

As indicated above, this battery is particularly surprising and
original: a fairly thin standard battery pack, a rounded shape and
ergonomic for holding, and especially on one of its sides, a myriad of
small flexible suction cups and finally... A funny curved cable connected to a
prise micro USB.

This cable can be removed if necessary.

The case is delivered with a micro USB cable, this will be used for
recharge.

The battery is brilliant, suffice to say the finger marks are
visible.

At the back, a button allows you to know the charge level, it lights
Blue LEDs, 4 lit indicate that the battery is at full capacity.
They light up when recharging to indicate the level reached. We
indicated in our last battery test, this type of indicator is
indispensable.

The battery has a displayed capacity of 2000 MAh, it recharges in 4
approximately hours with the charger supplied with the iPhone. This capacity should
allow you to fully recharge the iPhone 5, which has a capacity of
1450 mAh, we will see the results of our measurements later in the test.

This type of battery, unlike shells which can be placed in
place all day is best kept with you (pocket, bag) in case of
need. The use and installation remains extremely simple and
fast.

Simply unplug the gray curved cable, position the battery
on the back of the iPhone and lightly press, POP, the suction cups
have their effect, the whole is united, well attached to the iPhone and does not
will loosen more than pulling vigorously. On very smooth hulls,
as
the one tested here for example
, we still noted that the battery had
tendency to slide to the side easily, without necessarily
detach
.

You must then reconnect the cable (see the photo below, connection
in progress) so that it connects the battery's mini-USB jack to the port
lightning of the iPhone (or iPod touch), this is done without
difficulty.

We will focus for a moment on the advantages and disadvantages of this
connexion.

Firstly, the flexible suction cups and cable allowof
adapt to rigid iPhone protection such as a plastic case

it will therefore not necessarily be necessary to remove the iPhone from its protection
in these cases. On the other hand, this hanging system is not suitable for
leather, a grainy surface or a case that is too soft a priori (but not tested
due to not having one available). Another point to check: you should not
not that the protection surrounds the Lightning port because the plug would not fit.
The correct adaptation to a hull will then depend on the model.

Here used with a transparent shell:

Also advantage of this solution, the jack socket on the bottom of the iPhone
remains accessible.

Recharging

As soon as the battery and the iPhone are connected, as long as the battery is
charged, the iPhone is powered and charges. It is nevertheless possible if we
If desired, stop the charging by pressing and holding the button
rear of the hull. To restart charging, simply carry out
another long press.

Regarding iPhone charging, tests have shown that the Powerskin
gave a very good boost to the iPhone 5 battery unfortunately
without exactly reaching a full charge:

  • Starting charging, battery full, iPhone only 1% charged
  • at the end of45 minutes, iPhone reaches 50% of
    charge
  • after 1h30, 91%
  • the battery discharges completely after1h40, the iPhone is
    reached 96%
    dump

We therefore do not obtain a complete recharge but 95%… It was not
loin 😉

Anecdotally, we note that itcan be used with a
iPad mini
and in this case, it's about 30% additional charge
which can be obtained with pop n full charge.

The battery, as we have seen, is recharged with a micro-USB cable provided, this one
can be plugged into the iPhone's USB transformer or into a
computer. It will be noted in this case that thisalso allows the
iPhone sync
(and its recharge). If you have
several devices using this type of cable, you will then be able to do without
du câble Lightning.

Regarding use: connection, installation and handling, not
any particular criticism to be made of this solution, it is even very good
suitable for holding in the hand and does not hinder any function, the photo cell by
example remains largely clear at the rear.

It is possible to place the iPhone on a flat surface, to make calls with
the battery in place even while recharging, in short, if it increases
the thickness naturally, it is not very annoying and above all, in
only 45 minutes, we boost the iPhone for a good time.
The only small criticism is that fans will note the propensity of lacquered plastic to
catch finger marks like a magnet.

To remove the battery, you have to pull quite hard, a sign that it is very
well hung, you probably also have to be careful not to force too much
at the level of the plastic part at the bottom of the iPhone, so as not to risk
to tear it off (I don't know how it holds so in doubt
…)

Conclusion

Initially, with the first images of this mobile charging solution,
I admit that I was not at all seduced: this strange aspect with the
suction cups, the fact that it is not complete protection made me
before having tested them,prefer
the battery case
. But it was a mistake! After the two tests,
for several reasons, it is this model which is undoubtedly the choice.
So,the bulk in particular in use is
lesser
, stored in a pocket it is not particularly
cumbersome. However, once in place, itholds well and even if
we wouldn't keep it on all day, it ensures recharging
quickly
. Another undeniable positive aspect, even if not perfect, it
allows an almost complete recharge (95%) whereon
big sister only offered 60%
. Finally, it is less expensive since
sold at a price of approximately 58 euros.

In the end, a very good surprise!

Namely, the same manufacturer offers another charging solution, tested
in this article
