20 years later, Apple could resurrect the design of the iMac G4

Apple launched the iMac G4 in 2003 but 20 years later, its design still interests the Apple brand's engineers. In recent months, rumors have grown around the idea of an intelligent robotic arm, capable of controlling a large part of Apple's home automation.

A new device from Apple?

This new device, the existence of which is still to be proven, would be a direct competitor to the Google Nest orl’Amazon Echo Show. Apple would have planned to make the product much more premium, with a fairly surprising price positioning for this type of product.

Indeed, the latest rumors, reported by Bloomberg agency journalist Mark Gurman, suggest that this new product will be sold for around $1,000. In his newsletter this Sunday, called “Power On”, he explains that Apple's latest prototype would be quite small.

A smaller product

It could be compared to two iPhones stuck together. The device would sit on a small round base, similar to the iMac G4 from the early 2000s. This structure could house speakers and other electronic devices yet to be defined.

On the software side, Apple should launch a new OS, specifically for this product. It would be quite close to iPadOS. Note that this operating systemhas already served as the basis for visionOS.In addition to functioning as a hub for a connected home, the device would be built with the idea of facilitating video calls and image playback, much like Meta's Portal can do.

Launch in 2026?

If Apple has not yet made any comments on this new device, rumors do not envisage a marketing before 2026 at the earliest. Until then, you will have to continue to use a HomePod, without a screen, to serve as a Hub in a connected home.

These two years of waiting could also give time to the competition to develop and improve their products. It will be interesting to see how well the Amazon Echo Show andthe Google Nestwill have evolved in 2026 and if Apple manages to catch up with this distant competition with a first generation of a new product.
