The year was particularly successful for Apple TV+. If the Cupertino company does not give any figures on its audience or its number of subscribers, the service is starting to make a name for itself in France, where it is marketed as part of bundled offers with Canal+. The public praises its approach which focuses above all on quality rather than quantity. To highlight these original creations, we came up with the idea of this article which presents our 5 favorites for 2023.
Shrinking
In this series, we follow the life of Jimmy, a psychologist whose wife has just died. Strongly affected by this mourning, the latter then begins to speak to his patients with total frankness, enough to create very funny situations.
Shrinking, it is also a human story which alternates between comic moments, more serious scenes which evoke themes such as guilt, mourning, loneliness, and even illness. We come away charmed by this production full of empathy for its protagonists, and which respects the spectator.
Apple TV+ has already ordered a second season, and that’s good. We can't wait to see the duo Jason Segel and Harrison Ford who work very well on screen. Let's also mention other successful characters such as Gaby, well played by Jessica Williams.
Hijack
This very efficient production will blow your mind. We follow the hijacking of a plane bound for London. A bit like in 24 Hours, we experience the 7 hours of flight in the company of these protagonists.
Sam Nelson (Idris Elba who bursts into the screen), is a particularly experienced negotiator in the business world. Here he must prove himself in a very delicate mission, and tries to start discussions with the hostage-takers.
We then take part in the game and try to understand. Who are these criminals, and what pushes them to act (banditry, terrorism)? Some may criticize the series for selling a little too much hope at the beginning, for a not-so-extraordinary resolution.
However, we do not shy away from our pleasure throughout the seven episodes. The public really appreciated it.Hijackis one of Apple TV+'s greatest successes if we are to believe the statistics provided by the Nielsen company.
Silo
Silowas an expected series on our side. This is a work originally told in books, by Hugh Howey. In several volumes, this American author told in the 2010s the story of a population of several thousand people living locked underground, in a sort of giant building, the silo. The lower you go in that silo, the lower you go in the social strata of that community.
It is by following the adventures of Juliette Nichols, propelled as sheriff of the silo somewhat in spite of herself, that you discover what is going on in this silo and in particular the secret actions of the defendants of the Pact, this set of rules which governs life in the silo. Because if we initially think that this silo is there to protect its inhabitants from the outside world, we find ourselves totally confused on the question as we progress in the story, which especially pushes us to always want to watch the episode according to!
Special mention in any case for Rebecca Ferguson, playing the tormented heroine Juliette Nichols with transcendence and for the rapper Common, playing a more than enigmatic character brilliantly.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters
Tackling the “MonsterVerse” is never an easy task. But despite the weight of this universe, Apple decided to try it withMonarch: Legacy of Monsters, his last big production for Apple TV+. For the moment, only a few episodes of the first season are available on the platform. Butthey announce a high quality series, impressive by its monsters obviously, but also by the writing and the time we take advantage of to slowly discover the different characters involved around Monarch, this mysterious entity strangely associated with monstrology.
Whether you are a Godzilla fan or not, we advise you to try it, you will surely not be disappointed. The icing on the cake is that the casting is high-flying, including Kurt Russell and his son Wyatt, but also Ren Watabe.
Ted Lasso: Final Season
The year 2023 saw the seriesTed Lassoto know, normally, its third and final season. With this, the end of a scenario that we felt was coming to an end. Ending a series at the right time is no easy feat. The past has shown us that many heroes and heroines have sometimes returned to the forefront for one or more additional seasons of their respective series, at the cost of shaky writing and disappointing story ploys. This is why we tip our hat to the creatures ofTed Lassofor knowing how to end the story correctly.
If in 2023 you haven't seen yetTed Lasso, we envy you. What a joy to discover this coach, always in a good mood, with surprising and not always effective coaching methods. During season 3, we discover with pleasure the outcome of several arcs initiated in season 2, one of which concerns his former assistantNate, while another leads us to discover in more depth the endearing personality ofRoy Kent, Coach Lasso's grumpy assistant.
In the end,Ted Lassois one of the best comedy series of recent years. She's a bit like a good cake. We would like to start again (a new season), but we know that it will probably be too much. Let's be content with what we have, the 3 seasons ofTed Lassoare enough to laugh, cry, think and love. Thank you coach Lasso and good luck!
And you, what have you watched and enjoyed on Apple TV+ this year? And what do you expect for 2024?
