WWDC 2022: iOS 16, M2 chip, etc., what is Apple preparing for us?

Update: added the latest information about the augmented reality headset.

Apple's developer conference, or WWDC, will take place from June 6 to 10 at Apple Park. As usual, a presentation will open the show. Tim Cook will probably launch the latter on Monday June 6 at 10 a.m. (California time), 7 p.m. French time.

During this Keynote, several new features should be revealed. Software first of all, with first words on the new versions of the brand's operating systems, iOS 16, iPadOS 16, watchOS 9 and macOS 13. But also hardware, with highly anticipated new Macs.

Let us see, by cross-checking recent rumors and analyst reports, therevelations that should mark this Apple Event on June 6.

iPhone et iPad

The iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 systems will be the stars of the Apple Event and the entire WWDC conference, like other upcoming OSes. Based on Apple's usual schedule, iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, seen on stage during the Keynote, should be offered in a first beta iteration to developers at the same time. Then, during the month of June and throughout the summer, until the fall and the release of the next iPhones, the two OS for Apple mobile devices will experience different test versions and various developments that we will not fail to introduce to you .

You can discover a first preview of the new iOS 16 featuresin our articles tagged “iOS 16”. For a summary of the changes to expect, see the following article:

For these next versions of iOS and iPadOS, Apple seems to want to focus on certain aspects, notifications, locked screen, health, messages without greatly changing last year's recipe on the rest. It must be admitted that iOS 15 and iPadOS 15were not stingy with change. We still hope for additions for the iPad with even more powerful multitasking than what iPadOS 15 allows.

Finally, for supported machines, you would need to have an iPhone 7 or newer, and an iPad 6, mini 5, Air 3 or Pro from 2016 or newer.

Mac and other OS

Regarding the next version of the Mac OS, at this stage, the mystery remains. We do not know its possible name nor the additions it should bring (scant clues suggest the nickname “Mammoth”).

For Apple Watch and watchOS 9, it's the same. We do not yet know what new features will be included in the next system for apple watches. Still, we wouldn't risk much in predicting new health and sports features.

We imagine that watchOS 9 will be released with iOS 16, around the beginning or middle of September. As for macOS 13, it is better to expect a release a little later, around October, or even November, depending on the habits of the Californian company.

Small mention for tvOS, which should also experience a major update, introduced at WWDC and offered to everyone in fall 2022.

Hardware announcements

Mac mini M2: very likely

The Mac mini M1 arrived in 2020. Furthermore, it was during the 2020 WWDC that the Apple silicon platform was shown to the general public for the first time. And the Mac mini was then the first Apple machine to benefit from it, with a version of the computer for developers going on sale during the summer of the same year.

We can therefore clearly see Tim Cook and his acolytes presenting the M2 chip this year (and Mark Gurman too), for MacBook Air, so as seen below, but also, andprimarily for Mac mini.

MacBook Air M2 : probable

This is another highly anticipated device. The MacBook Air M1 was released in November 2020. We are almost in mid-2022, which gives a fairly logical timing for renewing the machine (even if a little short). And to mark the occasion, what could be better than the transition to a new generation of Apple silicon chip. The M1 Pro, M1 Max and M1 Ultra processors, as we have seen, have been reserved for more high-end machines, MacBook Pro and Mac Studio. Everything therefore suggests that aMacBook Air M2 is in the boxes at Apple.

iMac Pro: quite likely

At the start of the year, several analysts agreed that Apple had indeed not abandoned the iMac Pro, even though the machine has not been available for sale for some time now. The Californian firm could take advantage of WWDC, dedicated to developers, to emphasize its Pro machines, with the return of an iMac Pro. Obviously, the beast would come equipped with an Apple silicon, M1 Max or M1 Ultra chip. If there is an announcement of the M2, we imagine the latter confined to low-cost Macs and without communication on M2 Max/Pro/Ultra derivatives in parallel.

Mac Pro: quite likely

Even if at this stage we only have a few rumors supporting the arrival of a new Mac Pro this year, we can imagine Apple taking advantage of the event to finallyannounce the renewal of its most powerful computer.

Already, the Mac Pro is one of the last Macs still in the range running on Intel architecture. Then, the current generation of the big tower was introduced in 2019. Finally, it is rumored that Apple would be able to offer a machine taking advantage of two M1 Ultra chips fused together to form a Soc of crazy power.

And then, let's not forget that WWDC is a fertile ground for announcements of new hardware products for professionals, given that the event is primarily dedicated to app developers.

The Mac Pro is also the Holy Grail in the eyes of the latter, and obviously other professionals. Its arrival in the Apple silicon world is therefore eagerly awaited. We will now see if Apple will respond to this hope within a month.

Augmented reality headset: quite likely

Finally, we know that Apple is working on a project toaugmented reality headset. The firm could unveil a first version of such a device at WWDC, which would give developers time to master the platform and the system underlying the whole thing. This “realityOS”,as some have already named it in advance, would be enriched with apps for a few months, before the headset actually arrives on the market, for everyone, in 2022 or perhaps 2023.

The fact remains that such a novelty going off the beaten track always remains difficult to predict, especially since Apple will not hesitate to delay its revelations on the subject in the event of the slightest concerns, until a few days before the keynote from June 6.

Ultimately, the upcoming Apple Event promises to be quite classic, unless this new AR feature comes along.

Update: May 30, realityOS trademark registrationwas detected. But typically, while this information fueled rumors of the release of an augmented reality headset next Monday, Ming-Chi Kuo came to put out the fire.According to him, no product related to augmented reality or virtual reality at WWDC 2022.
