The catch
Lightning was inaugurated by Apple with the iPhone 5, it has since shown its
advantage: compact, reliable and reversible. Many manufacturers offer
in addition cables varied in terms of length with very short ones to be
carried in the pocket or hung on a key ring, or even very long
to move away from the wall outlet. We were able to see these different models
and other more original ina
selection of more than 20 cables certified by Apple here.
But there is a type of cable that we have never had the opportunity to test,
It isan iPhone/iPad Lightning socket compatible extension cable. In
having the need for a very particular use, which we will see in another
article (unbearable teasing) I chose a model offered at around 7
euros :
- it is about
the 1 m Lightning OKCS extension sold here
Here is a test and some photos while we also discuss
its usefulness and limitations, not necessarily obvious!
Why a Lightning extension cord?
This is undoubtedly what those familiar with iPhone and iPad connectivity have
immediately thought:a Lightning extension cord is useless
!
Indeed, with the democratization of cables, at lower prices (of
far) to those offered by Apple, we find 2m cables at very low prices.
reasonable (see
this example, a modeltested
ici) sometimes even at the cost of a 1 m extension. Suffice it to say thatand
you only want to gain length, you might as well buy a good cable more
long!
But beyond adding length, in certain cases, we may need
ofplug a Lightning accessory not directly into the iPhone,
but a little further, to be able to handle it more easily. It is
for example the case of athermal cameraas
that of Flir sold here, but there is no doubt that the examples can be
multiplied. We will see another example, but that will be for another article
(reteasing !)
But which lightning extension cable to choose? The choice is not huge and
Apple does not offer any. Worse, it seems that the Made For certification
iPhone, is not available for this type of product. In
theory, this should not be a problem in terms of
reliability, in fact, an extension must just connect each leg of the socket
mixes with a female socket... But in practice it is a problem because such a cable
cannot work with all accessories(see
below !). We couldn't find an MFi extension cord, so we took what we had
find !
Order
made here on Amazon, and fast reception!
The extension, unsurprisingly, consists at one end of a socket
Lightning male everything is most classic. On the other side, it is a
female socket which terminates the cable. The whole thing is clean in terms of
presentation and manufacturing, but not sure that the assembly of the socket
"female" side is very resistant over time.
We also note the size of the female connector: rather imposing.
It isto be taken into account depending on the use desired in
faire!
Once the extension cord is plugged into the iPhone, simply insert a cable into it
Standard Apple, or an accessory. We then feel the little similar click
to that felt when inserting the cable into the iPhone. Everything is good
tenuous. No alert is reported on the iPhone regarding an absence
compatibility.
In use, we verified that the cable was effective forreload
l’iPhonejust like to ensuresynchronization via
USB.
No notable problem other than asmall limitIn
the case where amore powerful charger than that delivered by Apple for
l’iPhone(that of the iPad for example) is used. In this case,
the intensity delivered appears limited to 1.07 mAh instead of 1.62 mAh. There
recharging is therefore slower. But this limit does not apply with
the standard iPhone charger (less than 1 mAh).
The extension was then tested with
the Flir thermal camera mentioned before, the test is perfectly
conclusive! It works as if it were inserted into the iPhone,
except that we can thenwalk her around at arm's length much more
easilyand thus bring it to slightly less accessible spaces
than with the iPhone.
On the other hand, another test, with themicro Lightning Shure
vu is,it didn't work, he is not
recognized !
In the end, we have a simple product, which does what we ask of it, at a
price too high to justify its purchase for the sole purpose of
“extension”, but which can help out for uses that are a little
specific. But be careful, compatibility is not guaranteed with all
accessoires "lightning".
We will see one of these uses very soon! (Teasing Number 3
