You will need to choose a unique nickname, then decide who can contact you: people who have your nickname, or those who have your number.
If you go pseudo, you can even require strangers to enter a PIN to add you the first time. An effective way to filter unwanted contacts.
Welcome additional protection
Please note that people who already have your number continue to see it, even if you choose to be contacted only via your nickname. This option is therefore only intended for new contacts.
The arrival of nicknames on WhatsAppis great news for anyone who values their privacy. This is a welcome additional protection, in addition to existing options such as blocking discussions or controlling additions to groups.
