Netflix co-founder and former boss Marc Randolph hadvery harsh words on Apple TV+while he reacted to the creation and development of new streaming platforms, competing with his own, toYahoo Finance.
He notably criticized the fact that Apple always offers solutions to access its streaming platform for free,it is in fact possible to have a one-year subscription to Apple TV+ for the purchase of a new Apple product. According to him, this offer undermines the economic model of the platform and prevents it from really developing.“If they spent a quarter of their time on content instead of giving gifts, they could really play”, he underlined.
Randolph also explained that it was necessary to give“reason to stay”for subscribers, for the moment, free of the Apple platform. He also criticized the policy implemented within the Cupertino streaming service, criticizing them for not entering“both feet”in the world of these platforms. According to him, Apple should take more risks with its platform: “you have to go to the edge of the cliff… and jump”.
Disney+ the only competitor to Netflix today?
The former boss of Netflix said he was much more concerned about the high-speed development of Disney+, the platform already having a very extensive catalog, but has also developed a significant number of original series and films (The Mandalorian , Mulan…) which lead new people to subscribe to the platform.
Today Netflix has around 200 million subscribers, for its part, Disney+, which is a much more recent platform, already has a base of 95 million subscribers around the world.
As a response to the rise in competition, Netflix announced that the platform would produce an original film every week during the year 2021. The solution to continuing to have subscribers seems to be clear to them, produce more to seduce more.
For its part, Apple seems to have made the opposite choice, favoring quality over quantity. But Apple has an extremely solid economic base that does not force the platform to be profitable quickly. Today Apple TV+ is a service that serves as a showcase for Apple and allows the brand to show the best it can produce, without necessarily worrying about whether these projects are profitable over time.
The release of Apple Oneshould make it possible to bring new subscribers to the Apple platform. The Cupertino company having chosen to rely on users of Apple Music, Apple's most popular service at the moment, to act as a "locomotive" for the company's other services which could gain subscribers with this merger of payments.
