iPhone's Touch ID sensor can be integrated into a side button according to an Apple patent

iPhone 8 rumors
are in agreement on certain characteristics. They almost all tend to
report the integration of an edge-to-edge OLED screen displaying a size of 5.8
inches diagonal.

On the other hand, regarding the position of Touch ID, it is more vague. Some
sources assure that the fingerprint sensor could be found on the back of
the iPhone, others persist in a position on the front under the screen,
while integration with a side button is even being considered.

It is this last hypothesis that is supported by a recent patent filed by
the apple firm:

This is notably Benjamin Geskin, Twitter user and smuggler of
numerous rumors about Apple products which
mentioned last month
the possibility of seeing a Touch ID integrated into the
Power button of the iPhone 8. A photo accompanied this statement to
support his statements.

At issue in this repositioning: difficulties in producing a
new generation biometric sensor integrated under the screen. To limit
the production delay of the iPhone 8, Apple would have, according to some analysts,
simply left aside the idea of Touch ID on the front to get it across
either at the back or on the side.

And precisely, an Apple patent recently made public by the American office
trademarks and patents, evokes a new way to unlock a
device using a fingerprint sensor integrated on an edge of the
housing.

The patent also ensures that it is possible for the biometric sensor
is integrated into a clickable button, such as the start button
example. The fingerprint would then be taken when pressing the
button. This would trigger confirmation of the identity of the
carrier, when unlocking the device, but also during a purchase
iTunes, among other manipulations.

This obviously does not confirm that Apple has chosen this solution for
the iPhone 8, but it is interesting to see that there are alternatives at
Apple now has a traditional biometric sensor on the front panel.

All that remains is to wait for the fall to finally be able to
choose Apple, between the different positions of Touch ID, but also the
other unlocking solutions like facial recognition or scanning
d’iris…
