Since the iPhone 5s, the Cupertino company has integrated an NFC chip intended for the use of Apple Pay. However, it was reserved for this use for several years, until the arrival of iOS 11. Apple then partially opened the chip to third-party applications, toallow reading of NFC tags.
At first, Apple remained cautious about opening up the iPhone's NFC functionality. However with iOS 13, the Apple firm bringsseveral new features for extended use of NFC.
According to the GoToTags site, specializing in NFC technologies and products, Apple has added several new features to the use of NFC in iOS 13.
We can mention the addition ofsupport for writing tags, a function that has existed for a long time on Android. It is important, since the user canbuy NFC tags on Amazonand give them specific actions or content.
This goes hand in hand with anew NFC trigger in the Shortcuts app. This allows you to configure a shortcut to automatically trigger when the user touches a certain NFC tag.
We can also mention the possibility ofpermanently lock an NFC tag, for example to prevent its use.
It is also possible that the iPhonecommunicates with multiple NFC protocolscommonly used, especially those used for public transport. This suggests the arrival of theNavigo map on iPhonein the near future.
Apple has brought severalimprovements to Apple Pay for NFC, and the Apple Card is no stranger to this. It also includes an NFC tag.
We could see it during the keynote, Apple added thesupport for pairing from one device to another via NFC, for example to share an audio stream with a close friend.
There are many other technical details regarding the use of NFC in iOS 13, which you can read inthis article from GoToTags.
It remains to be seen with which iPhone models these new NFC features will be available.
